The Hardest Ending

Of all the roads I've traveled 
of all that I have seen
the hardest ending ever felt
was one that might have been

for all that I have done
of some I can be proud
of some I feel regret
or at memories laugh out loud

I am at peace
with all I've done
with all I've seen 
and said

But for all those dreams, 
the "might have been"
it is the hardest 
ending yet

to not have known the outcome
to not have known I tried
to not have even started
and to watch as my dreams died

it's the beginnings and the endings
that we need to make up this life
with all of its great pleasures
and all of its sad strife

I am at peace 
with all I've lived,
still ready to help and comfort,  
to laugh, to love, to give

but an emptiness chills my heart
with longing and regret
about the things I put aside
when I was not ready yet...

To never hold you close
or hear my baby's cry
to not be there to comfort
or hug away a sigh

I'd rather try
and know I'd failed
than leave
and know I ran

for the hardest endings
I have felt
were those that 
never began
